Visit Grunthal – the place where the cool, the groovy and the sophisticated sport skis, snow goggles and snowflake patterned woolens.
It's a place where you can imagine that you have just slalomed down a precipitous ski run breezing past every other skier to come to rest just in front of the resort chalet where you will find warming food and sensational wine.

During the Winter Reds festival Verdun's Maximillian's Restaurant, which houses Sidewood Estate, will become Grunthal and visitors are encouraged to fulfill their apres ski fantasies and dress for the snow.

They are looking back to the past and calling Maximilian’s ‘Grunthal Ski Lodge’ for the weekend and will be serving traditional German food and drink.

Restaurant manager Emily Kneebone expects over 2,000- 4,000 people to attend ‘apres ski’ event over the weekend.

“We want people to come and enjoy our wine, food and hot cider as well as live music,” Emily said.

Emily also says there is no need to worry about the cold weather as there will be plenty of fire pits and guests wont have to worry about putting their heels on in the brisk weather – they can rug up in their ski clothes to enjoy the event.

As another step to ensure warmth and embrace German culture, they will be serving a traditional German hot spiced Sidewood cider to keep guests warm.

“The cellar door will be focusing on their pinot noir and there will be plenty of Sidewood’s award winning shiraz splashing around,” Emily said.

German staples such as traditional hot dogs with sauerkraut, pretzels and cinnamon doughnuts are sure to satisfy and there will be plenty of activities to keep the kids happy including face painting.

The Grunthal name is a nod to Verdun’s pre-war past as the town was named Grunthal prior to the war.

Longview Vineyard is hosting two events for the festival with one already selling out – all 150 allocated tickets.

The sold out event features smoked foods including kranskeys and chicken wings for lunch event on Sunday, July 28.

The Asado dinner – named after an Argentinian style barbeque – will be on the evening of Saturday, July 27 and has tickets still available and will include an exclusive tasting of the new vintage Longview’s ‘Devil’s Elbow’ Cabernet Sauvignon.

Served alongside Longview reds will be a five-course Argentinian feast including, Coffin Bay oysters, whole smoked salmon, smoked duck, lamb cooked on the asado grill and Hills quince for desert.

This will be a long table feast with lots of interactivity with the chefs during the feast.

Ngeringa is hosting a very special dinner in the fields with Michelin starred chef Andrew Wandless.

Andrew will cook for guests over an open fire at Ngeringa’s vegetable garden overlooking Mount Barker Summit and will feature a range of local and native produce with Ngeringa wines.

Another Winter Reds event will take you to the subcontinent – Nepal will be coming to Fox Creek Wines at Kuitpo Forest on Saturday, July 27.

Inspired by a recent stay in Nepal, Fox Creek co-owner Rachel Atkins says this is a picture of her perfect day and she is hoping she can share that with guests.

Starting with a three hour guided hike in Kuitpo Forest with a professional guide, patrons then head onto Fox Creek wines for a nourishing Nepalese lunch.

“Fox Creek is all about experiences – the hike before lunch is really important – and then people can settle in and cozy up with some comforting food and wine by the fire,” Rachel said.

The menu includes, dumplings, chicken, lamb and vegetarian Nepalese curries and sweet dumplings for desert all with matching Fox Creek red and white wines.
